I've been looking around my property and find alot of oysters, a few beefsteaks and a ton of some other little golden mushroom caps. Have a few questions. Can mushrooms be found in grassy areas where no trees are at? And should I be looking in the dampest areas of the woods, I have some heavy leaf covered areas where the sun doesnt get to the soil, do morels need the sun to sprout up? And If I find other mushrooms, is it possible to find morels mixed in with them or are they usually seperated? Thanks

1st off, leave those beefsteaks and little golden mushroom alone!

Morels... Yes they can be found way out in open fields, lawns and areas that don't have a tree anywhere around. But those area's like that producing morels are usually found by accident. A HAPPY accident, but an accident. Morels can grow almost anywhere. Really!

You don't have to search in the dampest areas for morels. In fast, while they love to be watered regularly, they also like to be well drained. A sandy loam soil is ideal.

As for sun or not, I'm not sure, but I doubt they would grow well in an area that is always damp and no sun at all. Remember they are found on a lot of hills.

Morels are often found interspersed with the false morels (verpa's) or the other false morel (beefsteak) Neither of those are morels. Other than that there aren't many mushroom out at the time of morels except the Cup Mushrooms and Dead Mans Fingers. I find morels among the Devil Urn Cup, Scarlet Cup and the Fingers.

But remember, the statement you see over and over again that "Morels grow where they want to" is true. So don't stop looking down as you walk.

also don't stop looking up as you walk too, so you can see the trees and landscape you are in when you do find them.

I'm no expert, but I hope I've helped you.
