I received this e-mail from Diane Pruden of the MMHC. Many of you, like me, know of Tom, but perhaps a few of you know him more personally.

From Diane:

I am a member of the Fungus Federation of Santa Cruz and the following was copied from an Email sent out by Darvin Deshazer today. The exact time frame is somewhat vague but it is clear that Tom is in a serious situation. I expect that many of you on this list either know Tom or have enjoyed his mycological site on the Internet.

Subject: Just heard this re Tom Volk

Just got this word from Tom's mentor, Hal Burdsall...if you hadn't known, you might want to share the news with others. Let's do a letter-blast to the greatest gift to amateur mycology and the world of fungi! Tom may well have his laptop on his lap; if you want to contact him that way, send to volk.thom@uwlax.edu.

From Hal, in his usual style:

Don't know what is the matter with my head but I neglected to write and
tell you (you have probably already heard by now) that Tom Volk is in the
hospital and has been for about two weeks. He had an infection in his
leg/foot by one of the so called flesh eating bacteria (Streptococcus
pyogenes). He underwent surgery and was in intensive care until Monday
(about a week) and is now in regular care but contracted pneumonia the
other day. He has beat that now. I talked with him a few minutes ago and
he sounds much better and is possibly going into the rehab center later
today or tomorrow. He needs the rehab because of all of the
"channels/grooves" Several of them a cm wide and deep and 10-15 cm
long??they cut into his leg and foot so the "gunk" (my term) will drain and
they actually have him rigged up so they can pull a suction on the leg to
assist in getting the "gunk" out.

No word at this time re dismissal from the hospital. I suspect he will
stay in rehab longer than some because of living alone. I understand that
his grad students have been giving him good support.
Pass this on (more promptly than I did) to anyone you think would be
interested.

Feb 14, 2005 Sorry the fungus of the month is late this month. I'm recovering in the hospital from a bad foot infection. There are apparently rampant rumors on the internet about the state of my health. My heart is fine, my lungs are fine, kidneys are fine, liver is fine. I'm just waiting on physical therapy and plastic surgeons to get me up and walking. For those who are interested in the technical details, I had a necrotizing fasciatus caused by Streptococcus pyogenes, a flesh eating bacterium. There were other complications, but those seem to be resolved. We hope to have the FotM up in a couple days. I'm doing ok, but have already been in the hospital more than three weeks. I'm in the Mayo Clinic right now, not because it's a particularly difficult case, but because my hospital in La Crosse is affiliated with Mayo, 70 miles away in Rochester, MN. I'm sorry I don't have time to answer individual emails, but many thanks for all of your support.
