I thought it was a strange looking coral, but it might be a caulifower in the early stages. There were about six of these ranging in sizes from a baseball to softball size. Here is another photo of a second one.

Nice ones. I can't find a chant anywhwere in Illinois to save myself. Found a lot of boletes and all kinds of others ( all full of bugs and far passed prime). It been hot and humid in the woods.

Jason, yes they are hard to see, except for the head which is black, the rest if the critter is small and almost translucent. If ever you find a shroom with the pin holes in the stem, take a sharp knife and cut along the tunnel that they created, you will find them.

Unless it's REALLY bad I just consider those things extra protein...lol!! Soaking it in saltwater for a while seems to draw those buggers out. Also, a dehydrator or something similar will make them want to leave quick too..lol!! If it's obvious and really bad yeah I throw them out. One or two though..................Well, you know.

those chants were mighty fine todd, sauteed them with onion,in butter and a bit of olive oil, diced up a left over steak from the night before, scrambeled 3 eggs over the whole mess, salt & pepper to taste, that was my breakfast buddy.:hungry::slurp:

Forgot to mention one other thing about chants. Just because you do not see any pin holes in the stem after cutting it, does not guarantee that they are bugg /worm free.
I have cut them in halfe length wise with no sign of a pin hole in the stem and found the cap just riddled with worm holes. Go figure

I went to a State Forest Tuesday and managed to find some Chanterelles. After cleaning and discarding the bad ones. I ended up with five pounds, which I had to share with a friend so we ended up with 2.5 pounds each. I dehydrated half and will munch and freeze the rest.
Today while walking the dog in the local woods I found the lobsters. That was a nice surprise.

You are so right Ed about the texture and strange looking eggs. If someone would slide a plate full of that concoction in front of you to eat, you'd have second thoughts about eating it.
But since you prepared it yoursef, you know what the ingredience consited of.

I'm with Woodbuch on the worms. A few weeks ago I found great #'s of Chants at our cabin. But only to find out that about 1 out of every 20 was bug free. The worms are very tiny and hard to spot.

Here are some of the larger chanterells I came across yesterday. I would quess about 3/4 of them had worms. I also found a few nice sized lobsters and a few sweet tooths and about half the sweet tooths were wormy.

I like the way you use your Pocket Change to show the size comparison Ed

Look at the size of those chants. Anymore that is pocket change. It costs me that in gas money to get home from the woods. My Dodge V10 gets 8 mpg

That money is only two tanks of gas now a days. The money belonged to my hunting partner, it takes two to make a mushroom run now. We had a lot of fun. Large woods in Ohio are miles apart. So if you live where the jobs are you have to travel to get to nature. The only woods left in Ohio are those not suitable for farming and they are usually hilly and rocky. The chanterelle where well spread out and the large ones seem to be in transitional areas, areas where the woods would thin out and sun light had more access. The lobsters seem to prefer darker areas with thick cover and downed trees and limbs.
