These mushrooms make an attractive photo but I'm fairly certain they are not edible. Any ideas on identification? Phot taken late November 2005.

I'm going to guess that those are one of the Coprinus species.

Probably Coprinus atramentarius-The Inky Cap

As they age, just like their cousin the Shaggy Mane, they start deliquescing or turning to a black gooey substance as they break down and attempt to distribute spores.

As they age, they often have a purple hue to them.

At this site, you can clearly see the purple coloring like your have.

If you think about it 4-6-05 is pretty early to be out looking for morels but I had already found a tiny one so that is what I was doing when I found those Coprinus atramentarius. Rex and I were talking about them and even though they are edible, I wasn't ready to give up my beer for "several days". The following was taken from mykoweb.com

"Edible, but not recommended unless alcoholic beverages are avoided for several days before and after ingestion. It contains a compound, coprine, that can cause nausea, facial flushing, and an accelerated heart beat when ingested with alcohol."
