Is the giant puffball ever found to be growing off of wood? I found one off of heavily decayed wood. It was still log shaped, but was crumbling. Has anyone else had this experience? Did you eat it? How did it taste?
The reason I ask is the dang thing tasted terribly. I haven't found one in about 10 years and remembered them being delicious.

Giant puffballs need to be snow white inside when you cut them for cooking. If they show any color at all (usually yellow) it is too late for yummy eating. There are lots of recipies for cooking them beer battered etc. and they are really good.

Thanks for the tips. This mushroom was indeed pure white. I was more curious about the finding of the giant puffbal (Calvatia gigantea) on wood seeing as all the literature I have states that they grow terrestrially. Also curious to know if it growing on wood effects the taste.
