Hen of the Wooods?

These popped up in our yard, we believe they are Hens. What do you think?

Looks like a hen to me.

Turn it over and tell us if there are pores or gills. Hens grow at the base of trees, there could be buried wood but my guess is that is not a hen. It you're lucky it's a cluster of oyster mushrooms.

Take a pic of the bottom and do a spore print.

At first glance it looks like a hen , but if you zoom in you can see gills. If oysters, & I also say they are, that's a nice clump. But where's the wood?? Spore print should be white.

It took some looking but I do see the gills. I'm wondering if they didn't grow in that spot. When the OP says they popped up in the yard I guess that could mean anywhere in the yard? Although they do not look like they've been picked off of a tree and then put in the grass for a photo. There must be buried wood in the yard but that just doesn't make sense for any P. ostreatus I've encountered. I find P. ostreatus on upright dead or nearly dead and sometimes pretty healthy looking trees, not on severely decomposed wood buried in the ground.

It would be nice if Mushroom Jack would give his opinion.
