Black Cherry and Ash.
Here are some pictures of ash and black cherry. The Black Cherry has black scaly bark, and ash trees have ridged bark. Also look for thicker, twigs which are opposite each other on ash.

Re: Black Cherry and Ash.
Here are some more pictures of ash trees.
In the first photo, you can also see some Eastern Hemlock to the left, Sugar Maple in the center-right, (behind the ash trunk) and a Black Cherry at the far right at the edge of the photo.

Re: Black Cherry and Ash.
Yup Jeff, found some under those cherry trees and feel pretty good about identifying the ash now. Funny thing is those darn shrooms seem to grow any where they darn well please. Our best find was amongst young cherries/pine mix.
thanks again for the help |

Re: Black Cherry and Ash.
Jochs, when I want to look for Ash trees I find it quite helpful to visualize "Standard Expanded Steel Metal". Ash bark and Expanded Steel both have a diamond pattern to it, your photo shows it clearly. nice

Re: Black Cherry and Ash.
Here are some more Black Cherry Photos. The first one is a broken one I took last spring, but on the left side there is a good look at mature Black Cherry Bark. The rest of the photos I took today, starting with two Black Cherries in my yard, and some photos of the ripening fruits. The last photo is looking up into a Black Cherry tree, showing the smooth younger bark.
