Do turkeys eat morels?

I've been surfing YouTube, and two of the videos are saying that you won't find any morels in areas populated with a lot of turkeys, since they eat them. Does anyone know this to be a fact? Has anyone ever seen turkeys eating morels? We have a a couple hundred acres of woods behind our house, and have never found a morel, but we do have a rafter of 32 turkeys that visit our yard every day during the winter. Am I wasting my time looking for morels in the woods if the turkeys are getting them first? Thanks for your imput!

Re: Do turkeys eat morels?

I hunt woods that hold a lot of turkeys and the turkeys will occasionally eat or tear up a morel, but it is not a meal of choice and any eating or disturbance of a morel would be incidental. if you're not even finding stems, then they just aren't there. Try dumping your morel wash water in those woods and see what happens. It worked on the property at my old house.

I've watched tree rats munch on different kinds of fungii so I would'nt rule out that they eat morels also...

Re: Do turkeys eat morels?

Thanks everyone for your replies. I have indeed taken the wash water from morels and dumped it in the woods, but so far no morels. I won't give up though. I have read in a number of sources that it is the best way of propagating your own patch. Now, if all those turkeys won't trample them . . . . .!!

OK. I've resisted long enough.

I know of a few turkeys that frequent this site that consume morels in every way they can imagine!!

LOL

Rip them up while scratching, like miker said.
