Icon16 Growing Ramps

I have not yet seen any ramps growing on my property. I would like to plant some ramps to plant by my house. I am also interested in lions mane mushrooms.

Re: Ramps wanted to plant.

How long have you been on the property? It just started warming up around me and the ramps have not popped up yet, but they should be soon. I can't wait, I'm stocking the freezer this year with ramp pesto and I heard you can freeze the leaves as well

Re: Ramps wanted to plant.

Freezing by turning into a pesto or compound butter:

1 lb. softened butter
1 to 2 cups ramp greens, chopped
2 Tbls freshly squeezed lemon juice

Re: Ramps wanted to plant.

Been here about eight months. Went out on mower for a few hours today and did not find any ramps. Tilled the yard some. Went back out to look still saw none. Saw shelf mushrooms on willows, they looked dry and sunbleached.

Re: Ramps wanted to plant.

bear, I highly doubt the ramps will be out yet... gonna take at least a week or two more before they are out. If you do not locate any, and remember to find me later in the year I would gladly collect some seed for you and mail it your way. But i'm sure you could just go locate some on state land and transplant them to your property just as easily. We have gobs of ramps around these parts, one of my favorite edibles from the woods.

Just bear in mind, Bear (pun intended :)
that ramps, grow rampant once they get started. (I know, I know... another pun lol)
In a few years you may have them crowding out other plants you would rather keep.

That is why I haven't started any here. But then I only have an acre total.
I've thought about using a raised bed, but they have a very long tap root, and I'm not sure even a raised bed would contain them from spreading.

Re: Ramps wanted to plant.

dirtybear, likely the reason for you finding ramps last season by now is because of the fast warm up, which has not occured yet. I harvest ramps from the state land here in MI for personal consumption, not sure if it's illegal or not though. Good luck with the ramp garden... sure wish I had some land to plant them onto!! but there are so many locally, i don't even need to grow them!

Re: Growing Ramps

I had found ramps by now last year very close by where I am now. Where I am has been warmer sooner than last year. Both the soil and the water has thawed sooner. I have been hearing frogs for a month or more singing about the start of every my morel seasons. You could say I have a thing for "microclimates".
I have located some ramp seed on the internet and I am continuing to seek more genetics.
