Forsythia is blooming, and our Black Cherries are starting to leaf out.

My minimorels will probably be big enough to pick later on this week.

Re: 2013 Morel predictions

Nasty day here in the thumb today, but weather looks to be warming up next week. The maple leaves have not opened up yet, but as soon as they are the size of mouse ears, it's game on. Next wednesday or thursday will start my season. hoot ! hoot!

Re: 2013 Morel predictions

i was planning on keeping my hunting to southeast michigan for the next couple weeks, but after seeing the recent weather reports... im debating whether or not i should make a trip up north (west branch) next week. Sat-Wed all look to be very nice days. and 5 consecutive overnight lows of at least mid-40's predicted. Compared to what we've had, that's great, and im hoping itll get them popping, but im just not sure if thatll be enough with the cold weather and snow they are still getting up north. anybody have an opinion on whether a trip up north next week might be a good idea, or a little premature? either way i'll at least take a day to go downstate a bit and look.

Re: 2013 Morel predictions

next week?? i would probably save the gas and wait if you're wanting to pick shrooms. they'll be just starting at best that far north. but I could be wrong :) just been too cold i think. I would wait until a report comes in from up there, because people have early spots and they know when they start up. when the report comes in, I'd wait a few days to let them get fired up, and then get up there!

but if you're just looking for a walk, anytime is good to go i suppose!

Seems like it should be a crackerjack season for yellows/whites! I was out looking in one of my old standby areas, but the trees are all chopped down now and the area is getting seared with direct sun now. I imagine that probably won't bode well for the Morels, time to explore some new ground!

Temps in the upper 70's with some rain predicted this week for S MI, with lows near 50. They should be out later this week.

Last year was so early, that we are all getting anxious because this is one of those later years.

OK - Here's my prediction:
I will go for my first morel hunt of the year on 5/12 and pick at least 300 mushrooms.
Over the following 2 weeks, I'll pick at least 1000 more.

I am predicting that I will be bring some good ones home in a day or two, as the Sugar Maples are now starting to bloom, and I usually find them at the same time the Sugar Maples are blooming.
