Re: chicken way up the tree

I found some of that high up in a Black Cherry tree a few years ago:
http://michiganmorels.com/funtalk/sh...ad.php?t=15638

That particular tree suffered severe damage during the July 1, 2014 derecho. Another tree with mushrooms in it was damaged in Nov 2013.

Living trees with mushrooms growing on them like that are often rotten inside and damaged by strong winds. If you have a tree by your house with mushrooms in them like that, you may want to have it removed.

If it is away from your house, leave the tree alone and get a big ladder and get those 'shrooms!

I wonder if you can get out there earlier this year and get those chickens before the worms do...? Hopefully you can!

Wouldn't that be wonderful???? They were primo when I picked them, so juicy and soft. I tried to just skim the worms off as I cooked them but couldn't stomach it. I think I talked about this on a different thread somewhere, not sure but sure don't mind talking about it again. If someone wants to listen to me talk about mushrooms then they are the greatest people on Earth.

Good thing we have this forum because I can only talk to normal people about mushrooms so long before their eyes glaze over. If I'm talking morels they are interested but not so much the other species. In fact most people think mushrooms only grow in the Spring. I guess they don't get out much.

The chicken tree will be easy picking this year IF it produces. It skips years. It fell apart during one of our major windstorms so big chunks are on the ground. Last time I visited the chicken tree I could still see and smell the old mushrooms. They have a very musty smell. I've gotten pretty good at identifying my favorite mushrooms by the smell they produce while decaying.

Have you ever noticed the honey fungus smells a lot like morels when rotting?

The umbrella polypore smells like hot rotting garbage inside of a black trash bag.

Most smell like rotting meat.

Wow, talk about a total thread hijack!

Blame it on Jeff, he got me started talking about that chicken tree and well.... I got a wee bit excited thinking about my forest fungi friends.

I hope everyone has the best morel season ever!
