oakland county finds, ? about burn morels

hey all,
found 14 in an old apple orchard in oakland county. got a good tip from a friend who was generous enough to let me hunt here :)

also -- has anyone had much luck actually finding morels in burn zones in michigan? i've cruised through quite a few. there's one in a public metropark that should be perfect. it's probably 20 or so acres in an area with mixed pine/deciduous trees, and i've had absolutely NO luck. i believe it was burned 2 years ago and i looked through it last year as well.

Re: oakland county finds, ? about burn morels

it just depends on if the area hosted morels in the first place. If you used to find morels there, then I would think it would be a good spot. but if you didn't have a good spot there, chances are there was no morel mycelium there in the first place and therefore there won't be any massive fruiting of mushrooms. The first year is always the best, but I have found them in the second year (this was a logged area but same concept).

With burn morels like the green morel or M. Capitata they are different. I've found them in mature jack pine burnt good about 15 feet up. Need a real good fire for them to pop.

when you say burnt 15ft up, are you referring to how far up the tree you are seeing burn damage?

Re: oakland county finds, ? about burn morels

I forgot to mention, i ran into someone in the woods the other day, saying how they were searching out the locations of the prescribed burn areas for morels (which there was not one where we were). He said, "did you see the link on the dnr webpage?", and he proceeded to tell me about how the dnr knows that morels are getting rare and they were burning the areas for the mushrooms... seriously no joking about this lol. I just kinda giggled and said well good luck! I don't mind when a guy like that comes into my spot cause he'll rarely ever find anything lol. he was passing by the elms and looking everywhere he shouldn't be basically. i had fun!
