Mecosta County False

just wanted to put this up for those who need reference :) it was pretty well in the "very fresh" stage. but the whitish color on the inside is the beginning of the stem being filled yes?

Classic verpa Blake. I've seen them packed with white to almost none at all. Not sure if more is an indication of maturity level or not.

I think sometimes slugs eat the white out of the stalks on the verpas.

You can always check the caps if you're not sure. Verpa caps twist off very easily, leaving the stalk behind with a white spot where the cap was attached at the very tip of the stalk.

Re: Mecosta County False

There is so much conflicting information about half free, false and whatever other kind of morel, I only eat real one's now. The guy who got me into shroom hunting has been eating all of em for 50 years. Then again he is crazier than I, and maybe the shrooms did it. I realized the other day I prefer hen of the woods in sunflower oil, cilantro, garlic powder, and of course plenty of butter over Morels anyhow. lol

Re: Mecosta County False

there are so many other good mushrooms... why even bother THINKING about eating potentially harmful ones??? I just like to pick all year long :)

Re: Mecosta County False

yeah I also love hens too. another favorite of mine are the late fall oyster mushrooms that love maples (sugar maple in particular i've noticed). they are friggin delicious. they show up in late november/early december.... if you've never had them, i highly suggest trying to locate some!

Hens are the only mushroom I have had good luck in finding large quantities.

Sadly, more people are hunting my spots and ruining them by pulling up the mushroom by the "roots".
