2017 Reports for Blacks

Just curious how everyone is doing for numbers on blacks this year.... as expected? less than expected? Really good?

I haven't been able to get into a "really good patch" this year yet. Been hunting in Mecosta County and haven't had an outing where i've turned up more than 40.

thanks everyone and I hope you're all doing well and picking lots of shrooms!

Re: 2017 Reports for Blacks

that's what I was thinking it was going to be.....

this is my first season hitting the BTA hard since I'm going to school in Big Rapids. Seems to me like there should just be more where I am hunting.

lots of one here, one there, one over there kinda hunting. no clusters. no "hot" areas so far.... LOTS OF PEOPLE and I've been trying to stay away from them in deeper areas...

Re: 2017 Reports for Blacks

In the SW corner I have found dry and fresh greys and yellows already. I never do seem to find blacks. My spots that I count on have produced nothing yet. It is a very interesting and educational year for me.

Right. My sure spots haven't produced at all although I have found many in the odd spots.
Weird year.

Re: 2017 Reports for Blacks

I had reported out earlier that this was the most fun I have had picking. In Livingston County, my usual Blacks never did show up, but last night I found some very nice mature yellows where I hadn't before. Ogemaw & Oscoda counties were magical for blacks (not 1 yellow) all of my spots were full with mature fresh mushrooms 2 weeks ago (over 400) and newly discovered areas gave me another 100 blacks last weekend. I think these 2 counties are still good, I was seeing some beginning to dry, but if an area wasn't already picked I think you'll have good luck with the black. There Verpas are passing on so it won't be much longer. I'll try to get a better handle on where to find the yellows. the ones I have found have been well developed.
Much better than last year, but I think I got in late. I've adjusted my view, I'm not waiting for Mothers Day & I'm not waiting for the Trilliums to be in bloom. May apples are up, I'm in the woods..

side note: If it feels right and you have the time go out and have a look. what can be better than kickin' around in the woods anyway? I think I beat the other pickers this year...

The good news: I found twice as many blacks this year compared to last year.

The bad news: I only found one last year.

Berrien County.

Mayapples are blooming in eastern Berrien County, getting ready to bloom in western Berrien, with some still sprouting out of the ground. It's kinda odd how I find mayapple ready to bloom a few feet away from some still pushing up out of the ground.

I'm hoping something will trigger the blacks to fruit again this year.
