In 1788 the people of a small village on the edge of the wilderness didn't raise enough crops to sustain themselves and famine, in all its horrors, stared them in the face. They sent the young men out to different settlements to try to obtain supplies. A merchant, Isaac Paris, consented to supply them on the only terms that they were able to offer. They, not having either gold or silver, proposed to pay him at some future time in ginseng. Long story short, he saved the settlement, the people paid him off in ginseng, and they named the village after him, Paris, NY. I own land not too far from that same village and the Sang is scarce. It's hard to believe that you can pick a plant to near extinction. End of story.

Thanks for the post and link. Good information there. I may have to start looking for it. It is legal to pick here on private land. Most public land is off limits, though some state forests do allow digging for personal use.
Here are the rules for MO: http://mdc.mo.gov/documents/nathis/flora/ginseng.pdf
