If I have a small batch I don't clean them at all. Cut them length wise inspect well, dust with flour, fry in butter and enjoy. If there are additional critters in them they must taste good also. Of course if they are very sandy or you notice a lot of insect they need to be washed.

I agree with deerslayer, the bugs are extra protien and alittle dirt never killed anybody.I just run mine under running tap water real quick,throw em on some paper towels to dry them off! Then it's frying time baby!
