Nothing better than this...

A couple of photos from the first hen hunt of fall. The fowl are roosting in Mid-MO and my kids couldn't be happier. Not even four and already have the fever.

First find of the day... (note: the mushroom has been positioned for the photo. It was found at the base of white oak.)

We found this one on the way back to the car...

The kids also have various sweet tooth and chanterelles which still can be found in small patches. Turning into a super fall!

Stan,

Thanks for sharing a very important part your family and their obvious enjoyment of the great outdoors with us. Simply the very best.

Stan,

Those are terrific pictures.

It's funny, I look at the second picture of the hen. It appears that it is growing at the base of that smallish oak. Looks like its 14-16" wide. For the life of me, I have at least a dozen oaks that I check that generate hens. Not one of them is any way near as small as that tree. Most of my 'Ole Faithfuls' are 40-50" in diameter. I just don't find them on smaller oaks.

Anyway, maybe I have subconsciously stopped looking at medium-sized oaks.

Again, great pictures of the kids.

Re: Nothing better than this...

Thanks guys, I just had to share the joy.

Ed, I usually find my hens around much larger trees as well but you can never rule out smaller ones. I have a good hen tree that has been producing for three years and is only now about 8 inches in diameter. I think the size of the tree helps (for example, I never finds more than one hen by small ones) but I don't think size matters at least not in my neck of the woods.
