Black Cherry...

I have only found around one black cherry ever... and some where growing right off the roots. Tree was about 6-7in in diameter. In a spot where i hunt elms but this was definitely from black cherry...

if you do use black cherry as host... what are your techniques when looking for black cherry trees to look by? Smaller trees... older trees... certain forest mix...

I have a lot of black cherry in my area...

I find them in a mixed woodland with white pine, red maple, and some oak trees.

Re: Black Cherry...

I find a lot of them in Oakland County, but have yet to find a morel near one. Do the Black Cherry trees have to be dead or dying to produce morels?

That's difficult to say (about the dead trees.)

Where I hunt there are a mixture of mature Black Cherries as well as dead standing ones, and dead fallen ones from storms in the past.
So far I haven't found any around my Black Cherries this year....last time was in 2003.

i have picked plenty around black cherry. my most recent batch of greys all came from 2 black cherry trees. however ive walked by many, many, many more black cherry that were unproductive. i havent been able to figure out what makes one a good host or not. i just try to look around every one i spot. hope to figure it out some day. have picked half frees, greys, and yellows around them but never blacks that i can remember.
