Re: North trip 2018

I'm still trying to find nice clusters of yellows like that, without having to go to California LOL. Good thing the Blacks taste good.
BTW: what's the next edible to come along? Chantys? I think I saw a good sized Pheasant the other day....

Lew

Look for aspen oysters right now in the aspen stands (not my favorite oyster though). Maple and Black Cherry oysters usually start mid June. Chicken of the Woods usually starts mid June on dead/dying oak trees and down limbs. Chants in mature oak forest with good "oak openings". They don't all produce, but when you get into them, you get into them!

In Washtenaw/Jackson I get chants on gravelly soil with oak, most often steep north slope. They are fairly secretive. Most places and years there are just a few. Some of my places will have lots in a good year. I agree with Jon that late june is when I start looking, but they can go on for a long time.

In Presque Isle county area, I get chants on beech. Find big ones. In large beech maple forest it is obvious that all the chants are next to the beeches.

I found oysters on poplar Memorial day already, but it's been very hot, and I got an extra inch of rain the friday before that most got none of.
