Re: Essentials for mushrooming

Always try to carry a knife for protection from coyotes. My brother was hunting them and they (3) came in on him in tall grass and ferns but he got his first one. Just to think what would have happened if someone was mushroom hunting in the woods.I may not carry a gun but at least i have a fighting chance with a knife. I also carry something to drink my mesh morel bag and a cell phone. Lately I would like a GPS/Nav cause we get pretty deep into the woods plus we could mark our finds and the paths/trails.

I never have taken a Bud Light. But for years I had a Jim and Carroll heavy with me.

Re: Essentials for mushrooming

All of my family and friends always laugh at me because I am scared of everything, Coyotes, bears, bugs... They crack jokes because of what I look like when I go in the woods. This year it has got worse, after reading an article in a newspaper about coyotes breeding with wolves, I just knew they would make it to my area and chase me down, I hear the coyotes at night and thats what orginally started my fear since we just moved to the country in 09. About a month after reading this article, I was sitting on my back deck and a coyote actually came up into my yard and around the garage, I stood up and the sucker looked right at me and ran off. Nobody believed me because I had said this one was a big as a lab. After reading in an earlier post here about coyotes in Hamilton, now I want a gun cause that's where I live....

Re: Essentials for mushrooming

We've started carrying a small kitchen trash bag for all the trash people leave. It's usually full when we leave which is sad but I like to think the woods are in a better place after my husband and I leave them. Also I bring one beer and pop it open when I find the first one of the season.....which will be NEXT WEEK!!!! Can't wait woo hoo.

Re: Essentials for mushrooming

Morchella, I like your attitude. My essentials are a compass, GPS, extra batteries, whistle, knife, mesh bag, and water. I'll start taking a garbage bag.

My non-essentials are a camera, snack, bug spray, rain poncho, toilet paper, back-packer shovel (to bury the toilet paper).

Sometimes, when I am planning a long day I will also bring sardines or smoked oysters.......or a fishing pole to catch dinner
