I've never found them in wintergreen and therefore have stopped looking there. Interesting that you've found some in the winter green.

Re: Wintergreen

What kind of trees were growing near the Wintergreen?
I have seen Wintergreen at Grand Mere State Park in Berrien Co., and it seems to be growing under Eastern White Pine.
I have only ever found one morel at Grand Mere in 25 years....probably because others had got to them before me.
About 10 years ago, I came across a mess of Beefsteaks there, but left them alone.

Re: Wintergreen

I have wintergreen on the forest floor where I find black morels. I often pick a hand full, very good, but I have never searched for wintergreen to find morels. wintergreen is here and there where I hunt sometimes you can find a nice morel right next to a nice wintergreen berry, but never really thought that there was any significance

Re: Wintergreen

I am not trying to question your identification skills, but are you sure they were Ref Oak and not Pin Oak? On the woods they look quite similar. I do fantastic around Pin Oak for yellows. I have never found them around Wintergreen.

Same here. I do great around pin oak. Not so much near red oaks now the bark on a red oak is pretty far from. The bark on a pin. But a tall tales sign of a pin is the branches always drift downward
