What is this ???

Hey guys...never found on of these and I can't find it in my I.D. book.
It's 6" tall, 2 1/2 " @ base and 4 inches at the top; it weighs 9 5/8
ounces. It is speckled at the top and a solid shaggy stalk.
WHAT IS IT ???

Interesting Brian. My first impression would be some sort of jeweled puffball that is growing funny. However, tough to tell. Did you cut it in half? Did it stain? Did you see the outline of a "baby mushroom" inside trying to grow out of the "egg?" Could possibly be some sort of cortina. Its getting closer to that time of year. If you cut it open and there is no outline inside of a young mushroom its some sort of odd shaped puffball. If there is the shape of a mushroom inside then it's something else. Interesting!

Just because I'm curious Mike... too big for an Amanita egg? I've not run across any in my short experience but I figured them much smaller.

Re: What is this ???

While I never found one, I'm thinking this may be a Gastroid Lepiota as described in Arora's "Mushrooms Demystified". My hint was the lepiota looking scales on top of that "ugly beast".

Hypomyces(ed) Strobilomyces floccopus (old man of the woods). I am seeing lots and lots of these this year.

HOWDY ED! Guess I hadn't seen you around in awhile?!

You think that is an old man? I've not run across a young one so I wouldn't know. I could believe that though. I was thinking it'd be much thinner.

Hi Vance,

If is tough to know. But when some of these specimens get attacked by hypomoces mold, they blow up. I have seen a bunch of old men of the woods this season that this has happened to. Hope you are well. Just been busy here with kids, work, summer, etc.
