Mushrooms are scarce

Hi All....just drove back home to Petoskey last weekend from Chicago to look for s'hrooms and found 5. Not 5 pounds, just 5. Very disappointing as I look forward to this every year. I looked around Conway, Boyne Highlands and Alanson area. Anyone have any luck?

Re: Mushrooms are scarce

Here in southern Michigan I found them near the mid mark of April. Did better than I have in years. Usually it has to be May to even have a chance where I hunt, so it is different this year. Have not been out in a week but am going this weekend to just look around. Who knows if they are there or not.

Greg, same story here when I was up near Boyne. Lots of beautiful walking with few shrooms.

Re: Mushrooms are scarce

As all of us know, we love the area and season so much that it is a disappointment when the weather/season isn't good. I did not see one false morel. leeks were not fully grown and leaves were also affected by the bizarre Spring.

Re: Mushrooms are scarce

I found one in Manistee N.F. last weekend.

In SW MI, the season was over early, and mushrooms were very scarce. It was dry in April, when it should have rained, and by the time beneficial rains arrived in May, the season was pretty much done.

This was definitely not a very good year. We've had more sun this year than normal. IIRC some of the best morel hunting years occurred when there were more cloudy days, and definitely more rain. We've had about 5 inches of rain in May so far this year, and that was all from one storm. This year, we've rarely had any stretches of several days with on and off rain...our rain comes all at once it seems.

Re: Mushrooms are scarce

Here in semich this was one of the best
Morel seasons I've seen in 10 years.
First good find was April 9th which beat
the old record by 11 days.
Sweatshirts and no skeeters was great.
We dont ever find the amounts like
up north but a little over 25 was
great for here.
Should be enough to last until next

I know a lot of people are still hoping for morels but the late spring/summer season is slowing rolling on here. I've found over 15# of oyster mushrooms of the last couple weeks. If you are new to mushroom hunting outside of morels, this is a great place to start the learning process.

The morel season here was basically a bust here in the Brighton area, alot of walking and walking with little finds, I still managed to fill my 2 one gallon jars with dehydrated morels, but everything else suffered, I still do not have my garden planted totally, and weeds are prevelant in my flower beds and fenceline, I have alot to do just to get back on course, all over morel season, when I should of given up, I didn't, and now it is alot of a$$breakin labor to get caught up,mike
