Found our first chickens

Our 10 year old granddaughter told us about this tree, She was looking at one of my books and said there is a tree with a bunch of these on it so off we went. Sure enough there they were. Went up the road a couple more miles and found another tree with some. Thanks Deb for taking the time out and helping us out (We are beginners with fall mushrooms). Cleaned them up and deep fried them, was amazed at how much they really do taste like chicken.
Barb
PS As you can see someone else had beat us to the tree but sure was a nice sight.

Nice find Barb. Can you let me know excally how you deep fried em. What kind of coating? How long? Seasoning?.

I had some of my first chicks I found, and sauteed in butter. I thought,,,,

Edible, yes.

Re: Found our first chickens

Thanks everyone. BirrdyBrad, I cleaned them and let soak for a few in salt water, drain and dipped them into Drake Batter, deep fried until it looked golden brown. On a few I sprinkled some Montreal seasoning on them. I took a bunch of them to local tavern and owner (he's also our shroom camping friend) thought they tasted just chicken fingers. Several folks that I know wont eat a morel tried and liked. Who knows though maybe were just being polite or hungry lol.My granddaughters liked real well also.HuntNDaddy I was thinking the same thing, tree branch pruners ; )
Barb
PS I just picked a few, can anyone tell me whats the frig life on these? I dont see anything growing extra on them as of yet.

Re: Found our first chickens

They'll keep for several days in fridge, but if you parboil them or saute them they freeze and keep for several months. I probably wouldn't go past 6 months though unless you vaccuum seal them.

And before you go thinking your taste buds aren't up to snuff, remember "edible", "good", and "choice" are subjective terms. I consider the shaggy mane edible, but very far from choice in my taste. But others love those shaggys. So before you avoid trying a good mushroom by what others say, just remember, everyones taste are different.

To Debbie, the chicken is choice. To me they are okay. To others they are like sawdust or something. To each their own.

Congrats on your introduction to the world of mushrooms beyond the morel.
