Eastern cottonwood tree identification

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9Ic1RxvPKU

Eastern cottonwood and the poplars in general are good hosts for morel mushrooms here in southern Michigan. I can't say Cottonwood is a great host, but it's sure worth taking a look if one is in the area.

Of course, Cottonwood and the other poplars are an important natural resource for a wide variety of other reasons.

The bark of Cottonwood is great for carving floats and bobbers for fishing.

The unopened winter time buds of Cottonwood produce a sticky substance known as Balm of Gilead, a very useful and potent medicine which is used for a wide variety of common and not so common ailments. Bees use balm to protect their hives from mites.

The cotton-like fluffy seeds can reportedly be used to dress wounds in an emergency situation. They're best known for plugging up your evaporator A/C fins, a great resource if you are a heating and air conditioning professional. LOL! Otherwise, not so much.

Cottonwoods, belonging to the willow family are fond of water. So, you'll likely find them and other Willow family plants growing where the water is near the surface. i.e. creeks, swamps, lake edges, etc. Being able to identify Cottonwood from a distance could help you locate a water source in an emergency situation, or any situation where you want to find water.

Hope it helps,

Roosevelt
