Daedalea quercina and an unknown cup fungi...

The first one is Daedalea quercina, a neat bracket fungi. Check out those "gills" for which the fungi was named (from Daedalus designed the maze which held the minotaur in mythology. They were very tough - the gils almost sandy feeling. The second one is a cup fungi of some sort. The first is pick of one I found on the ground. The last two are of one I found growing off a stump. I suspect it was Gyromitra leucoxantha which is more closely related to the false morels. I was finding other Gyromitra (beefsteaks) all over so its a hunch. In appearance, however, it resembled Discoitis venosa or Peziza arvernensis in color and texture based upon the pictures and description in those links. I can't seem to find morels but plenty of other interesting things!

The best lessons are those learned before you wish you had known better, especially when thinking edible mushrooms.
