We had a nice look at jellies, turkey tails and lichen earlier in the woods, but this afternoon Max found this treasure in an unexpected surburban area!

We're going to need snow blowers to harvest morels this year in Michigan, it looks like.

Snow's melting here in SE Michigan however we really need the temps to start climbing. Personally Im still getting used to the time change but enjoying every extra minute of sunlight we get. Enjoying dreams of morels, planning the garden, starting seeds in a week or so and making Spring/Summer plans. Ready to get into the woods!

I hiked at Grand Mere State Park in SW MI on Thursday, and most off the wooded areas were still under a heavy crust of snow. The snow had melted in open areas.
The advantage of this snow cover is that it is not allowing the sun to dry out the ground.

Hard to believe two years ago at this time morels were being found in Southern Michigan!

Here's a website I found when googling 2014 morels.

You can submit a report with a picture with your find. It looks like California, Oklahoma, Georgia, Arkansas, and Alabama are the places to be for morels right now.

Of course when the morels start popping in Michigan you'll want to post your findings on this board.

Re: first morels of 2014 found

Most of the snow in Berrien County, including northern facing slopes, is gone, thanks to this weeks rain (though we could get some snow overnight, which will melt tomorrow).
We also have spring peepers now, which is a welcome sign of spring.

I may go out and casually look for morel sprouts in the coming week, in the same place I found them last year, but won't do any serious, deep woods morel hunting until leaves start coming out on some trees, like the Black Cherries.
