What the heck is a half-free?

I see alot of you talk about half frees, what are they? Mushrooms? I had never heard of them before or seen one. You all got me bewildered! lol also we have Hens in the woods that grows at bottom of old oak tree in fall that my husbands best buddy always wants for eating, I didnt know if it was safe or not, That man eats road kill!!! lol are they good, how do you cook them cuz ours gets HUGE!! any answers to my questions would be apprectated!!!! thanks

Darby, the half free is Morchella semilibera, another form of a morel, type in Morchella semilibera on google or what ever search engine you have, yes the hen of the woods is a safe choice edible,mike

Half-frees are the gentle and best way of describing them. If you've heard anyone speak of them, they are commonly known as dogpeckers. Once you see one you will understand why.

Thanks guys, I looked them up on google and now I know what they are and what they look like, I have seen them in woods, and always thought they were just funky looking morels, but thanks NOW I know theyre half-frees! LOL thanks again guys!
