Re: Leaving small morels to grow

A mushroom can stop growing at any stage of development. For whatever reason, the fungus decides to give up on the fruitbody. The mycology term for this is an abort.
With mushrooms that grow slowly like morels, you never can tell if a small immature mushroom is an abort, or just hasnt had enough time to grow!
I have left them and returned to find larger ones.
More often though, I return later and find them rotten, the same size, or picked by other hunters.

I agree but ya never know. I left about 60-80 yesterday at noon and picked them about 2 hours ago and they grew 1/2-3/4" overnight. Biggest growth ever. I have found Plenty of aborted morels but glad about these

Re: Leaving small morels to grow

That as awesome Jon! I hope they are all growing that explosively!!
Don't get me wrong, I would love to have a more "let em grow" attitude.
I just hunt a lot of public land, and it rarely works out for me.

I always thought that when shrooms popped that that was the size they would be........well I was proven wrong today!!!! Last Wed. I went to one of my spots and found around 30 grays that were no bigger than a pencil eraser, when I went back today to check on them they had quadrupled in size......so the theory that shrooms don't grow is completely WRONG!!!!!!!!

Re: Leaving small morels to grow

A few years ago, we took our pop-up camper to a State Park in the northern part of the lower peninsula, and did some mushroom hunting. We left the camper there, came back home for three days, then went back up. We had a water container on a picnic table, and a small wet area developed where we opened the spigot to get the water. When we returned three days later, there was a lone yellow mushroom, about 3" tall, exactly where the spigot had dripped. It was not there when we left. So my experience has been that morels do grow quickly, and probably reach their growth potential shortly after they sprout.

Re: Leaving small morels to grow

I watched a youtube video where a guy left them a week and some of them doubled in size but they grew fastest the first 24 hours like I said.So yes if you have private land and can let them grow go for it but otherwise they are worth picking when you find them.

Re: Leaving small morels to grow

I left several my first day up north this week. 3 days later they had not changed one bit. Kind of strange. Other morels had popped all around them but the ones we marked and left never grew. It was interesting.
