2018 Buzzard Report

Just spotted this years first buzzards for me... just south of Houghton Lake. Looks like this is the latest I've seen them in a couple years - but only by a few days.

They've been here in ingham Co for well over a month. They found lots of roadkill to eat so they are taking their time getting up your way :-)

The number of dead deer in ditches is amazing this year. My deer population looks to be in excellent health this spring. My garden and fruit trees don't stand a chance.

We usually get a few dozen of them roosting in the backyard spruces for one night right on April 1. This year, they swarmed in around the beginning of March, and then again on March 31.

I've been seeing them in Berrien Co. for about 4 weeks now.
No Spring Peepers yet...last year in Berrien Co. they came out in late Feb. Normally they are out by mid-March here. Chorus Frogs are out though.
The grass hasn't really greened up yet, either here. Things are definitely later this year compared to the previous couple of years.

Re: 2018 Buzzard Report

A couple of weeks ago the Spring Peepers emerged in Berrien County. This past week the grass has really greened up, and forsythia bushes are now blooming, though many have spotty flowers due to extreme cold temps this past winter. In 2014, they only bloomed at ground level where the snow insulated them from the Polar Vortex. Though it isn't a buzz-word this year, we've been stuck in the Polar Vortex since mid-March, which is why the Western US has been relatively warm, and our region has been experiencing below normal temps for the last several weeks. (It snowed in St. Joseph a few hours ago..wet snow, but it was snow!)

As for buzzards, they have been in Berrien County since early March. I haven't seen that many, but then again, I haven't been looking for them.

I volunteered with the DNR pulling Garlic Mustard on 4/28 at Highland Rec Area. It snowed while we were setting up in the parking lot.
