Old seeds

Hi, I found a pak of tomato seeds packed for season of 2000.
Was going to toss them out, then I thought what the hey, I will plant some and see if they come up, (not out anything) to my suprise they came up as good as the ones i got this year.
Now I am woundering just how long are seeds good for.

I'm not certain how long they are good for, but I seem to recall the history channel talking about seeds they have found from the days of ancient Eygpt they have gotten to germinate. I would imagine the germination rate would decrease, but I know I have used old seeds with success and I've had some that didn't do so well.

I tried old seeds last year, I start them in the house first. Only a couple sprouted but died shortly after that. They were also from 2000. Hope this helps. Becky
