Any rain? Worth heading up this weekend?

I was just wondering how the weather has been up in the Grayling, Boyne, Atlanta areas this week? Have you guys received much rain? I was hoing so because the next few days will be WARM...

We were thinking about heading up for one last hoo-rah tomorrow but the reports aren't looking the greatest. Many people saying they are finding dry stuff or none at all, and even reports of locals lacking morels for sale.

Anybody up there that could give some good insight? Worth going up or should we just call it a season and start drooling for next year?

Thanks,
Brandon

No rain in Petoskey. Very dry in the woods! No one that I've talked to is finding any. Sorry.

Re: Any rain? Worth heading up this weekend?

Thank you Weioo for asking the question & Polish Princess for answering.

I had also been kicking around the idea of one last forage--even tho the mosquitoes were SAVAGE last weekend. But with the fires (Kalkaska, Grayling and now Gaylord?) and PP's report, looks like a good weekend for other stuff.

looking forward to 2011!

Already got plans made to go to Gaylord area with my son in the morning. Gonna give it a try. If there aren't many mushrooms we'll just hang out in the woods and then go to Gobbler's for dinner. Got some spots to hunt...if they are there, well get 'em. Let you know on Sunday how it went.

I have to agree with what has been said. Today, 3 of us found about twenty morels total around Gaylord. Most were fairly fresh but I have a bad feeling that there may not be another flush. The woods are beautiful, the caterpillars are horrible, and the mushrooms are very sparce. Still a great time though.

Manistee, Benzie, Wexford, and Grand Traverse all received some rain. Not a bunch but some...

Got back from North of Gaylord last night. Son and I found 24, mostly old. One measured 11 inches from base to tip. It was bent over, so didn't stand that tall. Caterpillar webs were horrible, mosquitoes were almost non-existent due to dry weather. Wouldn't recommend going up...end of the season in my opinion.

Re: Any rain? Worth heading up this weekend?

I just got back from the Boyne area and can confirm most of whats being said about the quantity of the morels, alot of walking and not much popped.
Very few were found by dead elms and they only seemed to be up by the most mature of them.

Very much enjoyable for me but some might consider my morel picking habits a bit extreme as I`m in the woods before 7am and I dont come back out until after 7pm, walking and looking the entire time for 8 straight days.

I had already been finding bigfoot yellows as of last tuesday. Also alot of what I found was sun dried since we had over a week of mid to upper 70`s temps, no cloud cover, and no rain.

There was a steady drizzle in the area (north portion) on friday evening so what was up got a chance to grow and the older ones got rinsed off.
The forecast for northen michigan in the next 10 days is for mid to upper 80`s.
I`ll be going again for the memorial weekend but I`ll be speding alot of that time looking for new spots, riding my bike, and fishing.

Re: Any rain? Worth heading up this weekend?

Just got back from Mancelona, Gaylord area. Not a one for us. The "good" spots we normally hit were extremely dry and grown up somethin fierce. Certain spots looked decent but not a mushroom. I will however say the burgers at "Timothy's Pub" and the new casino at Traverse City made the trip still amazing :)
