A little good news for morel season

This an excerpt of the Winter Forecast from Mike Hoffman, Chief Meteorologist at WNDU-TV in South Bend IN: The really good news is that after a very dry end of summer and fall, we should have a wet winter, with rain and melted snow helping to bring our ground moisture back to normal conditions by the end of winter.

Re: A little good news for morel season

Something I've been wondering...
It was very dry the summer and fall. Would that have affected the mycilium?
Might there be less because the conditions were'nt favorable for growth causing fewer morels?
Or more morels because the parent mycilium was stressed causing more effort to reproduce?

Re: A little good news for morel season

I don't know about the mycellium, but I'm pretty sure it stressed the trees. Any Elms that might have been close to dying will probably be dead next year. Two years ago a large elm died in my favorite woods and produced flushes of 113 and 60. Last year there was another even larger Elm close to death with only about a quarter of the tree having leaves. I'm hoping it died from the stress of the hot dry weather. With the right conditions this spring, the finds around that tree could be historic.
