Remember when the internet was honest?

Do you remember those days... when you clicked on a link in a search and it actually took you to an honest page of someones website that related to your search?

Remember when...
you could search. actually search, without getting 100 of hits that claimed to be just what you were looking for? Now all you get is sites that grab your word search in hopes that you will buy their unrelated product. Or more often just a page with a bunch of search generated links to no where.

The internet was crude when first started, but interesting.
Then it got good. Really good!

Now it's going south. It's really hard to find simple things with a single search.
Or maybe it's the search engines that is going south on us. You have to wade through 100's of fake pages sometimes to glean a tiny tidbit that you were searching for.

It is worse when it contains medical problems. If there is no money to be made, fine. You can actually get some info. But if the medical problem is something that someone can make money off of, like diabetes, or anything related to diets or mobility, than it's another story. It's become like TV Ads. You can get this for FREE. Just call.... and if you qualify, we'll ship free.
How many handicapped or medically challenged people are driven to despondency
by those come on's with TV & internet?

Remember when...
good people made websites to offer information on a subject, rather than trying by circumspect means, to get your money or interest into something entirely different.

I guess that's my rant for the day. LOL
So I am done now.

When people ask why I keep my site so simple, refer them to this post.

This site is still simple and honest and if I can't keep it that way, I'll quit.
I don't use the techy tricks to get people looking for Elk Hunting, Fishing in South America, Crabbing in Alaska and etc. to come to my page just because I used a sneaky trick to get them here.

They gotta search for what my site is about. And if I'm lucky it will turn up in the 1st, 2nd, or 3 page of the search.
So far we've done well in the search ratings without any tricks. Most of the ones ahead of me now are all commercial sites.

I only want people who are like us. Ordinary friendly mushroom hunters. Just like you!
And you don't even have to be a mushroom hunter to enjoy the friends here either.

Oh, don't mind me whitebeard. I was just venting my frustration with getting so many hits during a google search that takes me to sited totally unrelated to what I was searching for.

I don't know about the good ole days, but whatever happened to citing resources, and original thought?

Some days Google seems like a broken record skipping from one plagarized link to another.

As far as advertising goes, I have had so many folks try to friend me on Youtube just to get their name out there, everything from attorneys to television fitness gurus.

I am not a fan of online advertising unless it provides useful original information and knowledge along with the ad.

Re: Remember when the internet was honest?

I missed the beginnings, and being an old fashoned girl, I still don't spend much time on-line so I don't have to deal with what you all are discussing. But your question did start me thinking.
Hey, remember when research was done at the library? And took hours. And maybe you still didn't find what you needed?
And gas was cheap but nobody had a car?
And store-bought bread was a treat while biscuts were the usual fare?
And we all walked to school, barefoot, up hill, both ways....

Re: Remember when the internet was honest?

I used to find real good solid info at the library, still do. Learned how to fix my cars and trucks, motorbike, learned how to repair houses, do electrical and plumbing, learned how to get out of tickets, and even learned how to get divorced, LOL, all at the library.

The local libraries here are all linked together, and the books are much more up to date than they used to be. The internet has helped with that. At least with the library you don't have to wade through misinformation as long as you stay in the non-fiction aisles.

I heard someone say the other day that libraries are a dying breed, that's a scary thought. They should provide their resources online in electronic format, a virtual library.
