The Prep...Looking for advice on a GPS device

I'm planning on trekking deeper into the woods this year and I want he ability to easily navigate and know where I am, instead of getting lost.

Last year was my first year. My wife and I never venture too far into the woods, not more than 100-200 yards because I only had my iPhone as a GPS/map/compass, and AT&T service isn't the greatest in northern Michigan. This bring me to a new problem to solve...Which GPS device to purchase?

I'd like something with topography/maps to make it REALLY easy and simple to use, and know whats ahead and around me without walking that extra mile. At the same time my budget is $200, though I'd much rather find something for around $100, I know that's pushing it.

Anybody have any ideas/experience/advice on GPS units & usage?

Thanks,
Brandon

P.S. OMGOMGOMGOMG IT'S ALMOST TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Re: The Prep...Looking for advice on a GPS de

I'm very happy with my Garmin Etrex Venture HC. It doesn't have bells and whistles but is extremely good at keeping a signal in heavy woods. I'd be in big trouble without a GPS as I get turned around amazingly fast. One thing I've learned though is that they can act funny when the batteries run down, so keep plenty of fresh AA's available.

I was looking at some Garmin/Etrex models that looked similar. In fact, I almost settled one one for around $160 with almost the same specs. Thanks for posting and reviewing! :)

About how long do fresh batteries last?
Can you zoom in/out on the map?
Are you able to save/load points of interest (MOTHERLOADS!!!! :P)?
Is the map accurate/useful for finding your way around (I.E. you see marshland in the distance ahead on the map, are you able to tell the difference and avoid it or do you not know what's ahead exactly until you get there?)

Thanks! :)

Re: The Prep...Looking for advice on a GPS de

I use the lithium batteries and get about 12 good hours of use, the batteries are fine for other purposes after that but the GPS works better when they are fresh.

You can zoom in and out but you can't add any type of topographical info. For the most part it is just a good accurate system with very good reception. You can mark quite a few waypoints and create paths, but nothing too fancy.

Mattshroomer - Great tip, I'm going to do that now. I didn't think about that.

This one, whitelove?

That's a very nice GPS, but I don't think it's on sale any longer. :( Probably a good thing, I always over spend on crap like this, lol. I just want to ensure we don't get lost so my wife can keep her mind at ease and doesn't drive me up a wall. :)

We got the Oregon 450 this winter for chaga hunting. It is pretty nice, but I think we could have opted for a cheaper one and got along just as well.
