going to Boyne

The family and I have made a last minute choice to go up around Boyne and Gaylord area. We are brand new mushroom hunters, we have been on the forum for almost a year trying to get advice and knowledge about how to find morels. We don't want anyones spots we live in the toledo area and would perfer to hunt the Northwest Ohio region. If there will be anyone that is going to be in the Gaylord, Boyne area that would be willing to show us how to hunt for the right mushrooms we would be more than happy to learn.

If you've been reading the forum you have learned the types of trees (Ash, Elm, Wild Cherry, BTA, White Pine), type of terrain (lots of leaf litter, not a lot of undergrowth, trillium, trout lily, dutchman's breeches, leeks) that are most likely to be the right habitat for morels. I respectfully think that armed with this info you should venture out with a compass, water, mesh bags, bug dope & cell phone into the woods. This is how I started. I've walked a lot and found none, found some in unusual places, saw them from two tracks. You need to get out there. Check out where cars are parked, that's a good indication that there is something there.

I wish you luck, hope you hit the motherlode.

I agree with most of the above, except for going where other people go. Yes, that's a good plcace to find mushrooms, but will YOU find any?
