Morel season preparedness- week 22

Start searching online and your favorite catalogs to get your Christmas wish list together. Lots of cool stuff could make your morel hunting better and more comfortable next season such as hiking boots, outer wear, GPS etc. Don't forget about those great mushroom books either :National Audubon Field Guilde to Mushrooms by Gary Lincoff, Edible Wild Mushrooms of Illinois & Surrounding States by Joe McFarland & Gregory Mueller. Your loved ones are going to want your list next week on Thanksgiving.

morel season preparedness- week 20

That's right, only 20 weeks to go! Use this week to study trees. Use field guides or internet or whatever works for you. Familiarize yourself with the trees that make it happen. especially in southern MI, Ohio, and Indiana. Besides the Elm, Ash, and Poplar that produce most finds, we can't overlook the Big tooth Aspen, Sycamores, Cottonwoods, etc.

Thanks,
I'm starting to look forward to these tips almost as much as I look forward to the season. It's nice to think spring when I look out and see snow on the ground!

morel season preparedness- week 19

This weeks tip- watch mushroom videos (keep those eyes sharp). Youtube has a large selection of videos. One of my favorite videos is hosted on another site, but it is a must see for morel lovers.

morel season preparedness- week 18

This week we want to use our online resources to scout new areas. Look for potential hunting grounds an hour drive each direction. Spring weather patterns can be highly localized with areas 50 miles away having more adequate rains or avoiding those late season freezes that zapped your hot spots. There are several good map sites such as Bing, Google Earth, and Mapquest. Some people claim to be able to determine tree types from those aerial pictures

Ask Santa for lots of rain in April and May. Merry Christmas everyone.

Re: morel season preparedness- week 17

Had the most rain here since 1881 this year.

Have learned that excessive rain in the spring without
the right heat is meaningless for Molly Moochers.

Dear Santa
In April and May, I would like 3/4 inch of rain per week,
(only on weekdays), with a gradual warmup and let those
molly moochers that pop in my area only be visible to me.
much appreciated
thanks minor

ps..Have a safe ride and will send
you a couple of pounds in the spring.

Re: morel season preparedness- week 17

Good idea, but with all the milk and cookies ole Santa will probably be trying to lose a few pounds come spring. Maybe you should add a couple of low cal recipes to go with those shrooms!
