White Turkey

Every day, a rafter of about 33 wild turkeys come to our yard to feed on bird and sunflower seed. This year, a white one showed up. It is not an albino per se, since it is not perfectly white. I thought that the other turkeys would ostracize her, but not so!! I waste more time watching them!! Good thing I'm retired!!

Re: White Turkey

Wow, I have never seen a wild turkey like that.
Most of the wild turkey were bread with domestic ones years ago to bring them back to the wild. That one could have tapped into a certain gene from one of them.

Thanks for the picture. Very cool !!!

She's very pretty, that is a nice look for her! lol I can see where it would set her up as prey even easier than the normal brown undercolor. I'm curious, if that is a rcessive gene it probably wouldn't pass along to her chicks?

Re: White Turkey

We will be able to tell in the fall, when they start coming around again. If we have more whiteys, then I think we can assume that it is a dominant gene. Their mating season just started, so we are hoping that the toms find her attractive!!

Re: White Turkey

Thanks Jim for the info. I went online, but could only find information on what they called a "grey" turkey. Piebald . . . . hmmm. Think that her color means she has more white meat?? LOL!!
