Inky Caps
Inky Caps (Coprinopsis Atramentaria). Edible if no alcohol is consumed a few days before and after consumption. Quite good when dried, if you can dry them before they turn into ink! Found 3 pounds growing in soil under rotten wood chips in downtown Grand Rapids.

Re: Inky Caps
Glen, that's the same thing I do to the hard buttons, comatus. The best way I could come up with too. Tried freezing them, and after a month they tasted like dirt, the same with cooking them and freezing them. I can't do atramentarius cause I have too many drinks, too often. lol

Re: Inky Caps
Thanks Jack. I've yet to find enough Shaggy Manes (I love them and they are my wife's favorite mushroom; she even prefers them to morels!) to dry, and they are so tasty fresh! If I ever find a ton of them, I'll dry them as well ... so thanks for the tip! The atramentarias is a very average mushroom compared to comatus, but it tastes good in soups after drying them. Since we both rarely drink alcohol, we're OK with them.

Re: Inky Caps
I found two varieties. Larger inky caps with gray skin. and smaller ones that were more of a golden brown. Both looked the same besides the color and size...
