First of 2012 St. Joseph County

Found these along with a few more on my property in St. Joseph County. Too small, I'm going to let grow. Found about 15 right next to each other, didn't look anywhere else yet. My earliest find ever!

Nice find congrats! I've noticed some oak leaves on the ground in this picture, and on another users from this year as well...

I though morels did not like the oak tree areas?

Nice Finds !! Also wanted to throw my 2 cents in. lol I wouldn't exactly target a stand of oaks, but I have found a lot in mixed woods. I mean, there are several species of oaks and they are everywhere. I once targeted a large oak that had lost some limbs and from a distant looked slightly v-shaped,like an elm. This damaged white oak was holding around 30 whites, and a handful of greys. Basically, I'm just saying, dont count out a fence row or a small stand of woods just because it has oaks in it.Morels are called elusive for a reason too, as soon as you think you have it down to a science, something contradicting is thrown into the equation.
Happy Hunting gentlemen, and good luck out there. Keep them pics coming.

Re: First of 2012 St. Joseph County

I like hunting on DEFINED LINES where Oaks mix in with Popular in the early season. I think the scattered oaks allow more sun to come in along the bigger stands. You may see oak leaves in pictures but if the camera was pointing up to the sky you would see popular trees. I agree with HunterDave with not ruling it out and it not being an exact science. I'm not suprised though about all the chatter on an early season. Warmest winter on record in a while and above season temps continuing = 3 weeks early in my book. A pleasant suprise and perhaps a slow growing season from here on out as temps get back to normal.......whatever that is:)

My two farthings on the oak tree thing. Here in Muskegon County (the worst morel county in Michigan in my opinion) we have a majority of woods made up of oak, white pine, and hemlock. And I have yet to find a morel in this type of environment. Ever.

Not saying no one else never has or never will, just my personal experience.
