Question What plant is this?

I came across this plant in mostly Oak woodland. It has a white woody stalk and a top similar to asparagus, but more open and the "leaves" are flat. They are about 3" - 5" tall. The photo is attached.

I am asking because I stupidly picked one for closer examination, and about 10 minutes later I was REALLY sick. Contact poisoning? It passed in about 30 minutes.

Thank you! And yes, I will NEVER pick another plant without knowing the species first.

Re: What plant is this?

The picture looks like squaw root but doesn't seem to
to match your description.
They don't really have leaves that I know of.

I agree... squawroot. While it has some medicinal properties I doubt that it would have made you sick strictly through contact unless you happen to be that allergic to it.

The best lessons are those learned before you wish you had known better, especially when thinking edible mushrooms.

I see lots of Squawroot in the woods, but am not sure if morels associate with it. I did find two morels growing near some though.
