Found several pounds of asparagus

I didn't find any morels today, but I did collect several pounds of asparagus in the old field across the street from where I live.

Re: Found several pounds of asparagus

Nice find Jochs. I have planted about 20 different patches here in Indiana about 3 years ago. Key is to keep cutting them when they come up. They seem to grow after you cut one of the shoots off the original plant. Nothing like Asparagus grilled in butter with a side of fried mushrooms

Re: Found several pounds of asparagus

I've never found them in the wild. I'm locked into looking for morels & might have walked past some. Are they very common or do they act like morels & only grow in SELECT areas. I assume they come up in the same place every spring like the garden variety. I have them on my list of new wild edibles. Thanks for the pics.

Re: Found several pounds of asparagus

Asparagus is VERY common in the wild in Southern Michigan. It's that bushy green feathery looking plant that grows along the highway. It turns yellow in the fall. I'll try to remember to post a picture of Asparagus growing wild along I-94 or some other highway later this summer.
It grows in old fields, and even pops up as a weed in gardens. It is a perennial and difficult to get rid of, but most people don't want to do that.
It is not uncommon to see people picking it alongside the road.

Re: Found several pounds of asparagus

Here is a picture from last July. I took this while riding along with my brother on I-94 in SW MI. The asparagus stood out like a sore thumb against the dead grass.
Asparagus should be turning yellow soon, and very easy to spot.
edit: I've added a picture from June..you can see the feathery asparagus plants in the field. Like I said, it is VERY common in Southern MI.

Re: Found several pounds of asparagus

Here are some photos I took yesterday while riding with my brother to Kalamazoo. Asparagus turns yellow in the fall and is very easy to spot. Usually the dead stalks remain in the winter and can be used as a guide to find fresh spears in the spring.
The bushy yellow stuff in the grass is asparagus.
