big birch forests in Northern Michigan?

My wife and I have been doing a lot of chaga hunting lately and I'm wondering if anyone knows of any large mature (50yrs +) birch forests on public land in Northern Michigan. We live in on the North East side, but love to travel visiting new pieces of state forest.

If anyone can turn me on to a good one I'll send you a bar of the chaga soap we have been making!

I think most of the old growth birch forests remaining are in the UP.

Chris... you've got the best stuff over by you. I used to have a place to hunt just south of you and found chaga in several locals. As far as north of the bridge I have no idea.

Re: big birch forests in Northern Michigan?

We are lucky here in this area as far as the birches go. Also lucky with the abundance of public land.

It is pretty rare to find a pure birch stand that spans more than a half acre or so, but there are a few around here. We have had decent luck in cedar, hemlock, aspen, birch mix low lands, but they can be tough to get around in, especially in the summer.

Thanks for the replies!
