My wifes BIG hen!

Walking through the woods and my wife asks"Is that a hen or a rock?". I look down and to my right, a big hen it is!! Her first one and she got a great one! I had to leave the bottom 1/3 due to some white, fuzzy mold.

Re: My wifes BIG hen!

What sort of habitat is that? Jack pine? Red pine? I'm very interested in what type of area it is because I've had such poor luck over here in north eastern MI, I could use some guidance.

In the oaks by the pines. Look for big, old Oak trees that are going south or the stumps.
I found another about half the size that was past.

Nice find. I drove by one that size last week that bugged me all day. Stopped in and talked to the owner on the way home and got to pick it.

Chris, for whatever reason, the Hen's do not fruit that far North. I'm originally from Alpena, and know that I had never found one that far North. I'm not positive, and others fee free to chime in here, but the farthest North I've ever found them personally is around the West Branch area. Time for a road trip! Good luck!

Re: My wifes BIG hen!

Hey thanks for the tip! I had kind of come to the same conclusion myself after countless hours over several years and still coming up empty handed. I think a road trip is indeed in order!
