Sarcoscypha occidentalis

This was a surprise discovery. Sarcoscypha occidentalis, commonly known as the stalked scarlet cup or the western scarlet cup, from what I read is a commonly found in late spring early summer. It is not known to be edible but it sure is beautiful.

Although I sell cars my background is in Classical studies ancient Greek and Latin. Mycology has been a great way for me to refresh both these ancient languages. I have also found that the Greek and Latin tends to be, in most cases, more descriptive than most common names. To that end David Arora in “Mushrooms Demystified” has a section in the back dedicated to Greek and Latin roots that I have found incredibly helpful. For example, Sarcoscypha occidentalis
sarco-or ( before a vowel ) sarc-
combining form
indicating flesh: sarcoma
[from Greek sark-, sarx flesh]
sarc- or ( before a vowel ) sarc-
-— combining form
[from Greek sark-, sarx flesh]

Scyph-(a)the feminine ending—“Cup”

Occidental—“western”
