I think those area the beefsteak morels...some will eat them, others say not to. Depends on the individual.

There are edible members of this genus, but none are found east of the Rockies. Good idea not to eat them.

They are slightly toxic, and will not make you sick if you eat them at first.
However, your body cannot process the toxins and they stay in your body, and over the years build up until they eventually kill you.
Best advice....don't eat them!

My cousin ate them until she reached the toxic level. Now she can't tolerate any mushrooms.

You have to eat all mushrooms in moderation IMO. ( edible )
My mom has never had a ton of morels but after about seven years of eating them she can't eat them at all anymore.

Ok .......a couple of comments here have been bothering me with regards to the toxins in the Gyromitra. ..........

Although a sensitivity to toxins can be acquired over time ( bee venom is a good example) it is not a product of the toxins building up in the body over many years. Although long term damage from toxins can prevent the body from further processing newly introduced toxins. And there can be long term health problems from repeated exposure to minor amounts of toxins( alcohol / nicotine) It is real hard to find a short condensed version explaining why people eat these for years and then end up poisoning themselves with them. Here is the best I found. Note also that you can also poison your self during the cooking process and the chances of doing that can vary from year to year and from batch to batch of Gyromitra.

Gyromitrin content can differ greatly in different populations of the same species. For example, G. esculenta collected from Europe is "almost uniformly toxic", compared to rarer reports of toxicity from specimens collected from the US west of the Rocky Mountains.[13] A 1985 study reported that the stems of G. esculenta contained twice as much gyromitrin than the cap, and that mushrooms collected at higher altitudes contained less of the toxin than those collected at lower altitudes.[10]

The gyromitrin content in false morels has been reported to be in the range of 40732 milligrams of gyromitrin per kilogram of mushrooms (wet weight).[14] Gyromitrin is volatile and water soluble, and can be mostly removed from the mushrooms by cutting them to small pieces and repeatedly boiling them in copious amounts of water under good ventilation. Prolonged periods of air drying also reduces levels of the toxin.[14] In the US, there are typically between 30 and 100 cases of gyromitrin poisoning requiring medical attention. The mortality rate for cases worldwide is about 10%.[15]
