Here's a nice pic... Are they Half-Free's? :)

Everyone wants to know, it seems, eh?

Well, here's my pic. They're cut in half. See what you think.

Also, what do you think about this link where an expert ID's what seems like a Half-Free as a Verpa? http://thegreatmorel.com/mush/false13.html

Why does he call it a Verpa? It has a hollow stem (no fluff) and it's not attached right at the top. The thing is, I guess, that it's 'close' to the top. ?

Are there any best, solid ID tips? Like what about that gap-"hole"-space to the top that is created where the stem attaches partway down? Is that something to look for?

Thanks! JP

Those look like half-frees, not verpas to me.

Re: Here's a nice pic... Are they Half-Free's

totally look like half frees. verpa would have a cottony substance in the center when sliced in half... also the cap of the verpa is like an umbrella over the stem, rather than the half-free which the stem attaches to the cap like a true morel would (that hollow space you are referring to) and the verpas i've seen don't look anything like morels to me, though with the stem they have i suppose i could see why people could confuse them.

Thanks!

What do you think about that link where the expert shows a Verpa that seems to look like a Half-Free? It has that space above the attachment, but maybe not enough space?

That pic sure looks exactly like what you have there....but I always was told that Verpas have the white fuzzy stuff inside and the cap will just fall right off....it's not attached the way the half morel is.....I thought they were half morels from your pic...but I don't think I would take the chance eating them....you never know.

Verpas normally have a cottony substance in their stalks (provided a slug hasn't feasted on it.)
Apparently that "expert" is not an expert on morels because that is a half-free! Note the cap is attached to the stalk half-way down the cap! Also note the porous look of the cap. The grooves are straight, not curvy and wrinkled like on a verpa.
