A little ice fishing

Here's what I did Friday morning (before the blizzard!). That bucket had 22 gills. The bonus crappie (13 1/2") is a complete mystery to me.

I have fished this lake 9 months a year for 11 years. Never seen a crappie, never caught one. I heard a couple of neighbors claim to have caught one but they are not fisherman, so I assumed they had actually caught a rock bass. But this is definitely a white crappie, and a damn good one!

HEY ED,

IF THAT CRAPPIE IS 13.5 INCHES, WHAT'S THE SIZE ON THOSE GILLS? LOOKING GOOD.

HT,

The picture is deceiving. The crappie is laying on the floor. The gills are in a big bucket closer to the camera. I had another pic with the measuring tape but I deleted it.

Those are 8 to 9" bluegills. That biggest on on top might be 9.5"

YEARS AGO, I USED TO DABBLE IN TAXIDERMY. A FRIEND OF MINE BROUGHT ME A 12 1/2 BLUE GILL TO MOUNT. HE STILL HAS IT. WHAT A BULL, WITH A HUGE BUMP ON IT'S FOREHEAD. HE CAUGHT IT IN CADALLAC, IN THE OTHER LAKE (NOT CADALLAC).

What a gorgeous rainbow.

Congratulations! Now that is a bonus fish. Takes some skill to land a fish like that with light line through the ice.
