Re: Hens 2015

I hope this year is more productive than last year! Although I'm not sure why... I can't eat them anymore. I took a bag of dried hens and a bag of dried smoked hens with me to Washington to share because they don't really grow here.

I used a handful or 2 of hens to make something for lunch and dinner on Friday which I did eat, in fact I ate all of it and wanted more . I also made a huge pot of hen of the woods soup to take to the PSMS potluck.

Ok... gotta mention the PSMS potluck and camp out that is put on by Brian Luther of the Puget Sound Mycological Society. It's a 4 day camping foray near Leavenworth Washington. The area is so beautiful and close to great morel picking at several burns and Blewett Pass. We really did well in morel numbers this year. If you ever get the chance to be in Washington in the Spring you have to attend this foray. I'm told the fall forays are also very good.

Now back to the hen story. My stomach started hurting Friday night. I wasn't surprised because I had eaten a lot of fiber that day plus the hens and I've had trouble with this before. BUT then on Saturday the pain was so bad I didn't go with any of the organized foray groups so I could be free to run to the bathroom if I had too. Turned out to be a good idea because I spent the day doing the breathing technique they teach you in Lamaze class.

For about 9 hours I had intense intestinal pains that reminded me so much of late stage delivery. I almost broke down and called for help to get to the ER but figured that would be a waste of time and money. I had already lost my appendix so I knew that wasn't the problem. I knew it was the hens. I had ate way too many and thought I was going to DIE!

Finally about 6 pm the pain let up and I was able to enjoy the potluck to some extent. I passed on the King Boletes being freshly pan fried and the other mushroom dishes.

I'm really bummed about this because I LOVE hens. I love hunting them, I love finding them, and I love eating them.

I'll still hunt them, but will have to give them all away.

Or maybe I can try them one more time...

Just a little bit...
