Black bear on 131 just northof Cadillac

So Sat 8-10 hubby and I were driving home from a week on Beaver Island and we see a large black bear on the east side of 131 just north of the first Cadillac exit. I've spotted black bear before in the UP and only in remote areas plus I was in my car but never on a busy eway. I've heard about the 12 yr old girl just recently attacked by a black bear in Wexford county. Could it be the same one?? I've heard of bear sitings near Cadillac. Should I bring bear spray when hunting morels next season? Advice anyone?

That's the story of the bear attack.

When you leave Cadillac West, going west on M115 or M55, they do have yellow Bear Crossing sings. I personally have never seen a wild bear though....deer are very common however.

I remember back in the '70s when my grandparents lived in Cadillac there was a gas station/ice cream store (I think it is a Mobil now) just west of Cadillac West on M55 that had a bear in a cage. Anyone else remember this?

Yes Jeff, I do remember it. As a matter of fact in the late 90's when I was in the area with my girls, they were still there. Maybe a new generation of bears & owners alike. LOL

One ran across the trail in front of me as I was driving into Chandler Hills 3 years ago. Pretty cool but I wouldn't want to run across one alone. You'll never be able to outrun one, so make sure you take someone with you that you can outrun! :)

Re: Black bear on 131 just northof Cadillac

I camp near Baldwin and have seen only a few black bears in the 30+ years of camping there. They are around and have been for many years. I saw my first one about 25 years ago up there. Black bears are normally afraid of humans and will remain out of sight unless you come between mommy and her cubs. I have hunted them in the U.P. for a few years and if they smell you, hear you or see you they run away. I would not worry about them.

Bear spray? Try a Smith & Wesson. Wolves, aggressive bears, coyotes, crazy people... I won't go in the woods without one.

The bear in the cage was a huge old brown bear I believe. The cage is gone now.

The bear in the cage was there 40 years ago when my grandparents lived in Cadillac. It hasn't been there for a long time.

I do recall some time in the mid-1980's a black bear cub wandered through Mitchell State Park.

Both M-55 and M-115 west out of Cadillac have "Bear Area Next 7 Miles" signs, as you travel through the boggy areas west of lakes Cadillac and Mitchell.

agree with Kzoo, they really don't like to be seen and generally run before you even get close to them. I've yet to see one in MI, but this has been my experience with them in West Virginia....

one time we were floating down a river on a fishing trip... and one was just sitting on the bank of the river as we passed by 20 ft. away. it was cool! He was just staring at the water and watched us go by!
